Urban drivers will need the suite of available active safety and hazard avoidance technologies. For the average consumer, it may be a bit too extreme when it’s hard to see that car next to you. For driving enthusiasts, the QX30 will likely be a fun ride in urban, suburban and tight mountain curves. It’s mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission system with standard paddle shifters. It comes with 208 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque.

The new 2017 Infiniti QX30 FWD ($29,950 plus destination) should be high on the fun-to-drive meter with its 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four cylinder engine. Generally, crossover buyers are looking spacious interiors with lots of cargo-carrying ability. They may do that, but will buyers like the cramped feeling inside the luxury cabin? Just from the looks of the tiny rear window and back rear hatch, it could feel like a small sports coupe inside. Infiniti says they want to attract a new generation of premium buyers to their showrooms with the new premium crossover. Infiniti is after a new generation of buyers The raked roofline of the Infiniti QX30 will be tough to see out of. It certainly does that with its striking appearance and “dramatic curves and turbulent, sculpted character lines.” Turbulent looks cool, and it’s what surfers dream of, but they may not be best for the average consumer. It is an ideal car for an active urban lifestyle, but when the first child comes along the owner will be ready for the upcoming, midsize 2018 QX50.Infiniti says the all-new 2017 QX30 was created to make a bold visual statement. But it is more like a small racy wagon than an SUV crossover. I prefer the Infiniti exterior styling over that of the Mercedes GLA and interiors are an Infiniti specialty. The QX30 is an engaging first child in this partnership of assets. And each will cost in the mid-$40,000s with popular options. There are at least a half dozen QX30 competitors, including the Acura RDX, Audi Q3, BMW X1, Lexus NX, Lincoln MKC, Range Rover Evoque - and each is aimed at the same demographic of buyer. The liftgate is heavy with not the best leverage for lifting. It would be a chore to squeeze in a bike or other bulky sports gear. With seats folded the cargo space is about 5 feet long, 29 inches tall at the liftgate and 41 inches wide. The cargo area has 19.2 cubic feet of trunk space (with a rigid cover), expandable by the 60/40 folding back seat. The space is functional with bottle holders in the doors, a wide fold-down armrest with swing-out cup holders, a 12-volt plug and grab handles with coat hooks. And though there are three seat belts in the back, the space is better for two not-huge adults. The back seat has a short bench but a wide door opening, which helps entry. The front-seat area seems spacious enough for those with a subcompact body headroom is low at about 37 inches with the panorama sunroof and the seat bottoms may be short for large drivers. They are all there, but the climate control grouping is low in the center stack and a bit recessed, which can take eyes from the road. The cabin is snug and surface space is at a premium to provide storage and to place buttons, switches and cup holders in usable positions. Braking is flat and secure from 12.6-inch cross-drilled front disc brakes, 11.6-inch solid discs rear. The cabin is quiet below 50 mph, but the 18-inch runflat Continental ContiProContact SSR tires feel hard and spin up road noise at higher speeds. Ride quality is quite comfortable on the sporty-firm side. The tech feature can be annoying when creeping along in traffic and the engine is stopping and starting and you can feel the clutch engaging, the turbo spooling, etc. The engine also has auto stop-start at idle, which fortunately can be switched off. Fuel economy ratings are 21 mpg city, 30 highway and 25 mpg combined, on the recommended premium fuel. Performance from the QX30 can be timid in standard Eco mode (maximizing fuel economy), but Sport mode brings quicker acceleration, which is where I enjoyed most of my week in the test car. The styling treatment is dramatic and appealing. The Café Teak Package, $1,750, included gorgeous and genuine teak, high-quality brown Nappa leather upholstery and a black suedelike (Dinamica) headliner. Among the packages was the $2,200 Technology package of blind-spot warning, lane-departure warning, forward emergency braking, intelligent cruise control, high-beam assist, around view camera, moving object detection and intelligent parking assist. Today’s tester, a Premium AWD model, had a starting price of $38,695 and a sticker of $46,035.
